The Resume Format That Gets Callbacks at FAANG

Most resumes are rejected by ATS before a human ever reads them. And the ones that do get through? They fail to answer the only question recruiters care about: "Can this person do the job?" Here's the format that actually works.

The 1-Page Rule (and When to Break It)

For anyone with under 10 years of experience, one page is non-negotiable. Recruiters at FAANG companies spend an average of 7 seconds on an initial resume scan. A second page doesn't double your chances — it halves your impact.

One-page resume structure (top to bottom):

 1. 1.Name + contact (LinkedIn, GitHub, email) — no photo, no address
 2. 2.Summary line (1 sentence max — or skip entirely if < 3 YOE)
 3. 3.Work Experience (reverse chronological, 3–5 bullet points per role)
 4. 4.Projects (2–3 max, only if they demonstrate real engineering)
 5. 5.Education (degree, institution, graduation year — no GPA unless above 8.5/10)
 6. 6.Skills (languages, frameworks, tools — no proficiency bars)

The XYZ Formula (Used by Google Recruiters)

Every bullet point on your resume should follow one rule: Accomplished X, measured by Y, by doing Z.This is Google's official resume advice and it works for every tech company.

Built a REST API for user authentication

Reduced login latency by 40% by building a JWT-based auth API with Redis session caching, serving 50K+ daily active users

Worked on improving database performance

Cut average query time from 800ms to 90ms by adding composite indexes and rewriting 3 high-traffic SQL queries

Led the frontend redesign project

Increased conversion rate by 18% by leading a full React/Tailwind redesign of the checkout flow, shipping in 6 weeks

ATS Optimization: Get Past the Robots First

Applicant Tracking Systems filter out 75% of resumes before human review at large companies. Here's how to beat them without making your resume unreadable to humans.

Use exact keywords from the job description (e.g., "TypeScript" not "TS")

Use standard section headings: Work Experience, Skills, Education

Save as .pdf (from a Google Doc or LaTeX, not Word with tables)

Use a single-column layout — ATS chokes on multi-column designs

Headers/footers with your name — ATS often can't parse these

Tables, text boxes, or columns — breaks parsing badly

Images, icons, or skill rating bars — invisible to ATS

Fancy fonts or small font sizes (below 10pt)

Your 5-Step Pre-Submit Checklist

1

Mirror the job description

Copy 5–8 exact keywords from the JD into your resume bullets naturally. Don't keyword-stuff — weave them in.

2

Quantify everything possible

If you can't put a number, ask yourself: how many users, how much faster, how much revenue, how many team members?

3

Run it through a free ATS checker

Tools like Jobscan or Resume Worded will flag parsing issues before you apply.

4

Align your LinkedIn headline with your resume title

Recruiters cross-reference. Inconsistency looks careless.

5

Get one technical peer review

Not your mom — someone in the same role you're targeting. They'll catch jargon errors instantly.
